Sixpad For Athletes

Sixpad AthletesThe SIXPAD Athlete Support Project is a global initiative that aims to improve the performance of athletes through the provision of world class EMS technology to enhance daily training and conditioning.

Training gear SIXPAD's wearable product range provides athletes a convenient and effective way to continue training their core muscle strength during the off-season; any downtime they have; or during travel to competitions.

As well as working with athletes on the sports field, SIXPAD works with them off it, to gather data and insight to further research and develop EMS technology.

Putting the work in – training hard and smart

The game is becoming more and more physical, so it's down to us as players to make sure that we're keeping up with it and doing all the right things we can to give ourselves the best chance of playing well at the weekend.

All you want to do as a rugby player is play well on the weekend and that comes down to your preparation, a lot of which is done in the gym. You need to put yourself in the best physical shape possible to go out on game day and play well.

When you walk out onto the pitch you want to have that complete 100% confidence and self-belief and that comes from preparing well. If you don't put the effort in, and put the work in, you're going to get left behind and it's going to cost you.

How I use SIXPAD

The more I progress with my rugby career the harder training gets and the more intense it gets. One of my workouts is my core muscles and my core strength, so being able to use the Abs Fit, the one you put on your abs, is helpful to me because I really need to work on that aspect and hopefully I'll see the benefits of that.

After a game is when I use the ones on my legs. Covering up to 9,000 metres in a game, your legs get tired and you're fatigued. So, I wear the Body Fit the day after a game just to keep my muscles activated and to keep them moving. This is something that is going to help me loads after the match, so it's definitely something I'll keep doing after a game just to keep things ticking over.

Passion and Pride – a hunger to succeed

What I really admired when I was young, being an athlete, was how proud athletes made the country feel. I remember watching so many athletes on TV performing so well, just training really, really hard, and then going out there and performing to the best of their abilities.

I'd look at how my Mum and Dad would react to seeing people that they admired and inspired them to go on TV representing our country. I just thought "that's crazy, I mean, you don't know these people, you don't know them with a personal connection, but they can make you feel so proud". And I thought, "hopefully, one day if I worked really hard to do something, namely being an athlete, I could make people that don't even know me, feel proud of what I've achieved".

I've always been really competitive. Even though I ran my first race at eight years old, I've always been a sporty child. Growing up as an only child I used to play dominoes with my parents and even when I was about five or six, they would never let me win. They always used to play the hardest game they had and whenever I used to play, just hitting golf balls in the garden with my Dad, he'd never let me win, I had to work for it and achieve it. And the same with my Mum, she used to play hockey with me in the garden, she would never let me score any goals. I had to work for it. So, that drive for winning and drive for working hard and achieving something, and wanting to be really good at something, has been instilled in me since I was really young.

How I use SIXPAD

This type of training method, electrical stimulation to, kind of, get your muscles going and getting ready to fire quickly and efficiently, and activate all the muscles that might not already be activated by conventional training methods, it allows me to have that advantage, knowing that when the gun goes, I am on and ready to go. That is exactly why I love SIXPAD.

SIXPAD's really good for me in so many ways. If you look at it from a sprinting perspective, I really, really want to get out of the blocks first, I want to make sure that my muscles are switched on and activated as quickly as possible. SIXPAD allows me to do that, it makes sure all the muscles that are activated, that might not be activated through more conventional exercises are always on, they're being strengthened and they're being taught to react quickly and quick is the name of the game where I'm from, so anything that helps you be quick is fine with me.
